WWI & WWII Research Projects
A series of kits centred on WWI & WWII and the road to war.
Each kit contains 15 items, be it early reproduction newspapers from the war period, original banknotes from the Weimar Republic when the German currency was massively devalued to pay as WWI costs or WWII Emphmera including original photos and documents.
The idea is for you to break your class into 15 groups, usually pairs and have each group allocated an item which they will need to examine and research. What can they learn from "shaking hands with the past"?
The idea is to give them a tangible encounter with objects from the war periods and see what they can learn from the experience.

2. Tavern Pipe. A long 225mm clay pipe with foot and waxed mouth piece.
These pipes were often reused in inns and alehouses. One would buy the tobacco from the innkeeper who supplied the pipe.
Once you had used the pipe you would snap off about an inch of stem that had been in your mouth and place the pipe back in
the pipe box by the door to be reused by the next person. This would continue to happen until the pipe bowl was almost beneath the nose.
These were then called "nose warmers".
